Judd Trump is chasing a third German Masters title in Berlin this week, but the 2019 world champion faces a tall order to top his efforts in winning the 2021 tournament.
“I’ve got the incentive of trying to do well, and put the series to bed in this tournament,” said Trump after finishing with breaks of 114 and 66 with Stevens failing to register a point in the final two frames. “I’m still in, and hopefully I can improve in the next game.
“I’ve probably already scored more points than anyone has ever won it with before, so I would be incredibly unlucky not to win it from this position.
“I managed to pip Neil Robertson in the last event a couple of years ago. I don’t want that to happen to me. I’ve been very consistent in the series, and I hope I can do the same here.”
On Saturday 30 January 2021, he executed a pot on the green from distance at the German Masters that still manages to bewilder green baize fans across the globe three years on.
Losing 5-1 to Barry Hawkins in the semi-finals, Trump walloped the object ball into its pocket with exaggerated topspin and watched the white miraculously come to a halt via the baulk cushion as if under some sort of sorcerer’s spell to land perfectly on the brown.
Trump rolled in 131 before adding two more centuries in reeling off the final five frames in a remarkable comeback triumph.
Due to the pandemic, the tournament was staged behind closed doors in Milton Keynes rather than its home in Berlin, but at least the Eurosport cameras were on hand to capture a unique slice of snooker folklore that was named shot of the season. And a pot for any season.
“To be honest, I don’t think I’ve ever played a better shot,” said Trump, who progressed to claim back-to-back German Masters crowns with a 9-2 final win over close friend Jack Lisowski.
“The shots against Ding [Junhui in the quarter-finals a day earlier] and John Higgins [2019 Northern Ireland Open semi-final] were amazing, but that shot really is once in a lifetime, to stop the white like I did.
“You are kind of hoping that will happen, but you don’t truly believe it, but when I hit it, Barry has cracked up. Even shots like that, give me the belief when I sit down. I could have just rolled the green and missed it.
“The belief that gives you, I truly believed I could win the game at 5-2 down from that one shot.”
