Angel Di Maria scored the only goal of the game as Juventus beat Freiburg in the Europa League on Thursday night.

The veteran Argentine midfielder scored on a night when Paul Pogba was dropped from the starting line-up, reportedly for disciplinary reasons.
Di Maria’s former side Manchester United beat Real Betis 4-1, after goals from Marcus Rashford, Antony, Bruno Fernandes and Wout Weghorst for the home side, and Ayoze Perez for the Spanish team.

Shakhtar Donetsk drew their home game – played in Poland – against Feyenoord. Yaroslav Rakitskyi’s 79th-minute effort looked to be the winner before Ezequiel Ballaude levelled with two minutes of normal time remaining.

Joan Jordan and Erik Lamela both scored second-half goals for Sevilla as they defeated Fenerbahce 2-0 in Spain.

Roma secured a 2-0 win over Real Sociedad in their round-of-16 Europa League first-leg tie in Italy.

Stephen El Shaarawy put the home side ahead after just 13 minutes against their Basque visitors, with Marash Kumbulla adding a late second for Jose Mourinho’s men.

Germany’s Bayer Leverkusen will take a 2-0 lead into the second leg in Hungary next week after beating Ferencvaros.

Kerem Demirbay opened the scoring after just nine minutes before Edmond Tapsoba scored with just four minutes of normal time remaining.

Surprise Bundesliga package Union Berlin were held to a 3-3 draw against Belgium’s Union Saint-Gilloise in Germany.

Josip Juranovic and Robin Knoche scored the home side’s first two goals and a brace from VIctor Boniface and another from Yorbe Vertessen had Union Saint-Gilloise ahead until the 89th minute, when Sven Michel notched an equaliser.

Arsenal were 2-1 down after William Saliba’s opener was met by Goncalo Inacio and Paulinho goals from Sporting Lisbon, but an own goal from Hidemasa Morita just after the hour mark means Mikel Arteta have a chance at the Emirates in the second leg.

Anderlecht drew 1-1 at home to Villarreal in the Europa Conference League in Belgium as Anders Dreyer’s 57th-minute equaliser cancelled out Manu Trigueros’ opener after 28 minutes.

Another Belgian side, Gent, enjoyed the same scoreline as they hosted Istanbul Basaksehir. Gift Orban equalised for the home side after Stefano Okaka’s early opener.

Sivasspor, also from Turkey, lost 1-0 to Fiorentina after Antonin Barak scored for the home side on 69 minutes, and Sivasspor’s task in the return leg was made harder as Max-Alain Gradel saw red in injury time.

Swiss outfit Basel looked to be on course for a 2-1 win over Slovan Bratislava after Zeki Amdouni and Andi Zeqiri bookended Jurij Medvedev’s 17th minute strike, but Malik Abubakari made it 2-2 with an equaliser in the 70th minute.

Lech Poznan beat Djurgarden 2-0 at home with goals from Antonio Milic and then Filip Marchwinski.

Nice grabbed a 1-0 away win against Sheriff thanks to Ayoub Amraoui’s strike in first half added time.

West Ham took some respite from their poor domestic form as Michail Antonio’s two goals gave them a win at AEK Larnaca in Cyprus.
