The 38-year-old is riding the Giro for the last time after confirming he will retire at the end of the season.

Cavendish came close to victory on Stage 11 when he finished third, but will be looking to go better than that on Stage 17.

The 195km route from Pergine Valsugana to Caorle is flat and downhill, and should be a calm day for the general classification contenders.

Geraint Thomas (Ineos Grenadiers) leads Joao Almeida by 18 seconds in the general classification after they came home one-two on Stage 16.

Primoz Roglic (Jumbo-Visma) trails Thomas by 29 seconds after getting dropped on the final climb.

How can I watch the Giro d’Italia on TV and live stream?

Every stage will be broadcast in its entirety on Eurosport 1, while you can watch ad-free on discovery+ and eurosport.com.

The UK coverage will be bookended by The Breakaway, presented by Orla Chennaoui, who has Dan Lloyd, Adam Blythe and Robbie McEwen for company.

Rob Hatch, Sean Kelly, Lloyd and Blythe will be in the commentary box, with Jens Voigt and Blythe doing their thing on the back of a motorbike.

What time does Stage 17 of the Giro d’Italia start?

Stage 17 coverage will begin at 11:30 UK time on Wednesday, May 24.
