Coco Gauff reached the quarter-finals of Indian Wells with a 6-3 1-6 6-4 victory over Rebecca Peterson, while Maria Sakkari beat Karolina Pliskova.
Gauff looked to be in control when she won the first set 6-3, but her Swedish unseeded opponent fought back strongly in the second, levelling things up when she claimed the second 6-1.
The 19-year-old American has been improving year-on-year since her debut at 15, and reached the fourth round of the Australian Open at the start of the year.
She was able to steady her nerves and hit back against Peterson for a win in the third set to take her through to the last eight, to be played later in the week.
In another of the evening’s matches, Sakkari faced Pliskova as they battled to reach the last eight.
Pliksova had defeated Veronika Kudermetova in the previous round on Sunday, while Sakkari came from a set down to come back against Anhelina Kalenina.
The Greek, seeded 10 places above her Czech opponent, claimed the first set but Pliskova rallied to take the second and tee up the decisive set.
It was Sakkari who controlled the outcome of the game as she won the third set to complete a 6-4 5-7 6-3 win.
